The guns are big, the options are plentiful, and randomness is the name of the game. Neon Abyss is a frantic, roguelike action-platformer where you run ‘n’ gun your way into the Abyss as part of the Hades formed ‘Grim Squad’. And given that was just one of many runs, I found myself with a rather weird piece of weaponry a few runs later that while it didn’t seem like a lot, I end up loving it due to how the guns and the special skills go hand in hand.Still, it does come with its own challenges from every room whether it’s from the traps that shoots lasers at you, rotating spiked balls and other environmental hazards.
Take the variability of The Binding of Isaac but re-interpret the title as a side-scrolling shooter and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect from Neon Abyss. Neon Abyss plays like a panic-stricken, action, rouge game that knows exactly what it wants to be from beginning to the end. If anything, there is a bit of excess loot and it would’ve been nice if players could pick up weapons and change it in the inventory throughout each run instead of having to leave your current weapon behind. There are lots of branching rooms with a variety of sizes and things to do, but I would have wanted more especially because the aesthetic of the environments are quite mediocre.
The world is also procedurally generated and contains multiple rooms of different shapes and sizes filled with monsters to fight, secrets to find and treasures to obtain that goes from the petite and simple to the crazy and overpowered. When it comes to its overall world and level design though, it doesn’t come with the kind of pizzazz that high budget games are known for especially when a few seconds later, everything’s going to be filled with a lot of bullets that take half or the entirety of the screen anyway. While Neon Abyss packs in plenty of weird and wonderful guns, they’re not necessarily better than your default weapon. Featuring unlimited item synergies and a unique dungeon evolution system, each run diversifies the experience and every choice alters the ruleset. The over-the-top bullet particles from your own gun literally swallows the entire screen whole and this is something that ends up becoming a bit too much to be honest especially when you’ll barely see everything else including enemy bullets and projectiles that could possibly kill you in the process. This review is based on the PS4 version of the game. I enjoyed the randomized dungeons and their room variety at first. 35. While the concept isn’t completely original, in execution, there’s enjoyment to be found.
35. You may find hearts or crystals in a room that you can’t pick up because you’re already maxed out. The upgrades and progression out of game can be a little lackluster, especially for the time necessary to get those upgrades. But with different characters, different difficulties, and lots of loot and gear to keep players well equipped to fight people, it is a pretty good roguelike game. Different Guns Aren’t Guaranteed to Be Better Guns. It takes some time to unlock most of them, but always aim for these rather than characters or items. Many weapons come with sometimes-useful bonus skills, like the ability to use crystals to level it up in one room, or use a dodge roll. Its lack of meaningful out of game progress is unfortunate, but the extra features and a wide variety of weapons, gear, and modifications go a long way.The next major section to talk about is its roguelike features.
