The man who came in second, the candidate who came closest in electoral votes to defeating Lincoln, was John C. Breckinridge, the standard-bearer of Southern Democrats. In my own State, where I thought my character and antecedents were known, one of the oldest and most eminent of our public men has not said that I was a disunionist, but has intimated that I was connected with an organization whose, bone and body is disunion. Congressman William Richardson of Illinois decided that his good friend Breckinridge would make a fine vice president and quietly lobbied his fellow delegates. I appeal to you if I have not, with reasonable certainty I may say, conclusively repelled the accusotions against me; if I have not shown that it is neither I nor the party which nominated me, but Mr. DOUGLAS who has broken faith; that by the agreement at the time of the passing of the Kansas-Nebraska bill the constitutional point was to be left to the Supreme Court.

He told his uncle, “I have neither said or done anything to encourage [such talk]—and am firmly resolved not to do so.”He spent two terms in Congress, playing a key role in the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854. Breckinridge’s friends reluctantly agreed, even withdrawing his name when it was placed into consideration. What would have happened if the Democratic Party hadn’t split? Joining him on his frontier adventure was his cousin Thomas Bullock, with whom he intended to open a law practice. I might pause here, but in support of these principles I want the authority of Mr. CRITTENDEN himself. B. here read from a speech of DANIEL WEBSTER, where the position was taken that Territorial Governments were in a state of pupilage under the protection of the General Government; that they have no power not given by Congress, and that it is our duty to provide for the people of the Territories a Government to keep the peace; to secure their property; to assign to them a subordinate legislative authority; to see that the protection of their persons and the security of their property are all regularly provided for; to maintain them in that state until they grow into sufficient importance in point of population to be admitted into the Union as a State upon the same footing with the original States. Now, fellow-citizens, against the statements of that distinguished Senator, in which he understakes to prove allegations against myself by himself, and thus oppose my own statement. Douglas, however, placed second in the popular vote, earning 29.5 percent to Lincoln’s 39.8 percent. By the time Breckinridge and his men marched through the gates of Mexico City in mid-December, the American force had become an army of occupation.Breckinridge’s primary duty while serving as vice president was presiding over the Senate. If in these there is anything to justify the accusation it must be in the resolutions, as to property in the Territories.

[Loud cheers. A strikingly handsome man with impressive oratorical skills, he advanced from a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives to serve as vice president under James Buchanan from 1857 until 1861. A look at his career reveals a man with politics in his blood, but whose personal convictions made it difficult to navigate a moderate course in an era of moral and political extremes. [Applause.] With Jefferson Davis a prisoner back in the States, Breckinridge was the highest ranking official of the Confederacy still at large. What is rarely mentioned is that Douglas not only lost the 1860 election, he didn’t even come in second. It was by all accounts a loving marriage, producing six children. My name, however, was presented, and I felt I could not refuse to accept the nomination, under the circumstances, without abandoning vital principles and betraying my friends. After speaking of Mr. LINCOLN in terms as complimentary as his principles merit, and the Senator from Illinois in terms of eulogy, he speaks of his fellow-citizens. He even turned down an offer from President Pierce to serve as ambassador to Spain. The Democrats triumphed in November, earning 45.3 percent of the popular vote (174 electoral votes), with the Republicans earning 33.1 percent (114 electoral votes).
