In episode two, “The Power of No,” Gene attempts to reconnect with his son. Like “Barry,” it was about a murderer for whom we had mixed sympathies (a serial killer who tried to follow a code to whack only deserving victims). Also in regard to cinematography, in “Ronny/lily”, Hader demonstrates he knows how to realistically and artfully capture a fight sequence (the camera pans slowly and uses angles well, while also capturing the fight from a clever distance).While in Los Angeles, Barry follows his target into an acting class run by the spirited and empathetic acting coach Gene Cousineau (a hilarious and honest Henry Winkler), and ends up instantly attracted to the community of aspiring actors/performers, particularly egotistical yet resolute student Sally (played by Sarah Goldberg), who ends up being Barry’s love interest. Sooner or later, you have to pay up.And now, he longs to return to things as normal, without realizing that his worst deeds are always going to haunt him. After all, that’s what made season one and two work so devilishly well.Janice’s death prompts Gene to self-actualize and reflect. In a context that obviously involves a much lower body count, this mirrors Barry’s experience.
Carrying that discrepancy in his head and heart is too much for him, and, at least in the finale, it’s too much for Sally, too.I also wasn’t expecting much of what transpired in the finale, including Sally’s last-minute decision to act like a brave badass in her showcase depiction of her abusive marriage; Fuches opting to spare the life of Gene and prove that he can assume the Chechen advisory role Barry once did; and, certainly, the blind rage that drives Barry to enter the temple shared by the Chechen-Bolivian-Burmese mobs and go full John Wick on every single person he encounters.That goes for everybody in this cast, including Henry Winkler, who is so broken when he briefly gets arrested and accused in Janice’s murder that it’s almost unbearable to watch his downtrodden face, and Anthony Corrigan as Noho Hank, perhaps the one character who doesn’t change at all this season. “Barry” delineates Barry’s regret and lurking PTSD in a manner that’s subtle and earnest.
Gene’s teaching methods prove effective, as Barry does eventually revisit his past. On top of that, by insinuating himself into the Noho Hank situation, Fuches has rendered Barry irrelevant. Bill Hader wrote and directed ronny/lily the Season 2 Episode 5 of Barry that was a triumph for HBO. That kind of reckless behavior is fueled by blurred vision in the time of ire, confoundment and death. The final episode turns out to be the most monumental of these: Sally effectuates her play but alters it from a dour display of abuse to a crowd-pleasing revenge tale, where she tells off her abusive boyfriend.
Gene isn’t communicating with the acting class, he hasn’t shown up to a class in quite some time, and he’s spending too much time at the cabin where he last saw her, seeking to uncloak the details of how she vanished. “Barry” premieres Sunday, March 25 at 10:30 p.m. on HBO. The episode communicates how all of these factors build to a level of rage within Barry through careful editing, Hader’s rising thirst for vengeance, and smart but subtle visual choices. Barry only just escapes, because early on, he breaks Ronny’s windpipe, leaving the man gasping for breath, even as he all but renders Barry unconscious.But if there’s one thing about the show’s setup that makes me think it could have new ground to explore in seasons to come, it’s the way that it turns Barry into a kind of avatar of the country he once served, spreading death and destruction in contexts both legal and illegal, without really trying to engage with the morality of any of it.The setup for this episode is a classic antihero trope: Barry has been cornered by the cops, but Detective Loach, the cop who has caught him, wants not to bring Barry to justice but to blackmail Barry into carrying out a hit against the man who is sleeping with Loach’s ex-wife.
