He went on to study piano, composition, ethnomusicology, and electronic music at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio, the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and the University of Minnesota, Duluth.

I did not know Alan personally, but the stories Mary Angela Strasser shared with me in letters left me with the impression of a beloved young man filled with life and beautiful gifts.
