Alan left northern Minnesota at 16 to attend the Perpich Center for Arts Education in Minneapolis, finishing high school there. He began regimented study of music with piano lessons at the age of five, and continued studying piano as well as saxophone, bassoon, organ, and composition through his teens.

Lois SchmidtTo Roy and Nadine , my early memory of Alan is of his artistic talents. Alan W. Berg. He was born on August 15, 1961 in Woodstock to Ronald and Nancy Berg. He went on to study piano, composition, ethnomusicology, and electronic music at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio, the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and the University of Minnesota, Duluth.
I did not know Alan personally, but the stories Mary Angela Strasser shared with me in letters left me with the impression of a beloved young man filled with life and beautiful gifts.
